The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued a health advisory urging pilgrims participating in the 2025 Hajj to minimise exposure to extreme temperatures expected during the pilgrimage.

According to a notice released by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Monday, temperatures in Makkah are projected to exceed 42°C on the Day of Arafah (Thursday), prompting concerns over sunstroke and heat-related illnesses.

The advisory specifically recommends that pilgrims remain inside their air-conditioned tents between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Arafah Day to avoid direct exposure to the scorching heat.

Pilgrims were also warned against visiting Jabalur-Rahma (Mount Arafat), as such activity could increase the risk of sunstroke. Authorities confirmed that arrangements are in place to broadcast the Arafah Day Khutbah (sermon) directly into pilgrims’ tents.

After sunset on the Day of Arafah, pilgrims are advised to wait for designated buses to transport them to Muzdalifah. Walking to the site is prohibited under the new safety measures.

The advisory also stressed strict adherence to movement schedules for the symbolic stoning of the devil (Ramy al-Jamarat). Pilgrims are instructed not to proceed to Jamaraat outside their approved time slots to ensure crowd control and safety.

Furthermore, the Saudi authorities emphasised that only pilgrims with valid Hajj permits will be allowed access to tents in Mina and Arafah. Any violation of these guidelines will be treated as a breach of the agreements between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia regarding the Hajj exercise.

“All States’ Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and licensed tour operators must ensure strict compliance with movement schedules to Jamaraat,” the statement read. “These precautions are essential for the safety and well-being of all pilgrims.”

The advisory highlights the importance of coordinated logistics and personal health precautions as millions of Muslims prepare for the annual pilgrimage under challenging climatic conditions.
