Chronic kidney disease of non-traditional cause and heat stress
Organization: ENBEL
Year: 2023
Chronic kidney disease of non-traditional cause (CKDnt) affects millions of outdoor manual workers in tropical environments. The cause is clear: strenuous work in extreme heat without adequate rest, shade, and hydration. As global temperatures rise, more workers will be put at risk of CKDnt, and it will increasingly be of concern for workers in the EU and USA. Treatment of life-extending dialysis and kidney transplant in the late stage of the disease is costly and often not available. Prevention is paramount. Occupational improvements via evidence-based prevention protocols have demonstrated a reduction in acute kidney injury and CKDnt, increased productivity, and a positive return on investment for employers.
