Climate Shift Index® Global Map
Organization: Climate Central

The Climate Shift Index (CSI) is a daily attribution tool that quantifies how human-caused climate change influences the likelihood of local high and low temperatures. It combines observed weather data with climate model simulations to compare current temperature conditions against scenarios without human-induced warming. The CSI uses a scale from –5 to +5, where positive values indicate a temperature made more likely by climate change (+1 signals detectable influence, +5 means the event is at least five times more likely), and negative values show cooler temperatures that are now less probable. This index enables real-time assessment of how climate change is shaping daily weather across the globe. Designed for public communication, policy analysis, and media reporting, the tool makes climate attribution accessible and locally relevant. By offering daily CSI scores across thousands of locations, it empowers users to recognize the climate signal behind record-breaking heat, unseasonal warmth, or shifting extremes on a regular basis.
