New York State Heat Risk and Illness Dashboard

Organization: New York State Department of Health

Year: 2025

The New York State Heat and Illness Risk Dashboard is an interactive tool developed by the NYS Department of Health in partnership with UAlbany’s Mesonet and the National Weather Service. It provides daily, county-level forecasts of heat-related health risk up to seven days in advance, integrating real-time weather data and public health indicators like emergency department visits and EMS calls. The dashboard uses a color-coded risk system ranging from low to extreme and offers tailored guidance for each level. It supports public health preparedness by helping officials, schools, employers, and the public take timely actions—such as opening cooling centers or rescheduling outdoor activities. Designed to address the rising health impacts of extreme heat, the dashboard also offers historical context and contributes to statewide climate adaptation and health equity strategies.
