U.S Extreme Heat Playbook
Organization: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
Year: 2024
The Extreme Heat Playbook provides HUD grantees and community partners with a resource-rich and action-oriented framework to address the impacts of extreme heat in their communities. The playbook provides actionable guidance that builds and expands extensively on the Extreme Heat Quick Guide. The playbook is a deep dive “how to” resource that lays out clear steps to increase community resilience to extreme heat, support vulnerable populations, and empower key actors within communities at different scales.
Built upon four clear action tracks, the playbook includes multiple strategies within each section and provides project profiles that illustrate how other communities have addressed the impacts of extreme heat. It also includes resources on funding opportunities to support the implementation of recommended actions and strategies. Within each action track and its related strategies, the playbook further outlines roles and responsibilities of different partners, ranging from public sector (federal, Tribal, state, and local) to nonprofit and community-based organizations, utilities, private sector entities, and the media.
Ultimately, the Extreme Heat Playbook represents HUD’s commitment to its community partners as part of the National Heat Strategy, a coordinated federal response to address the impacts of extreme heat.
